O'Connor/Connor Emigrant Savings Bank Records
Collected by Coolehane@aol.com

The Emigrant Savings Bank was started in New York City by the Cardinal of the Catholic Church for the protection of the Irish. The employees of the bank were native Irish and therefore could understand the incoming Irish brogue and knew how to spell the names of the people, townlands, counties, etc. The bank was started in 1850 and the records which go through to about 1868 are loaded with information...persons name, when born, where born, townland, county, father's name and occupation, mother's name and maiden name, siblings, location of where they all are, their address in NYC, the number of children they have as well as the children's names. also included in many records is the year of arrival and ship of arrival. <

> These records are in the hands of the New York Public Library and there are index reels which you go through looking for the name you are researching. While all the letter "C" is together it is not alphabetized so it is time consuming. On the index reel beside the name is the account number. You then have to go to the reel which contains that account number and that is where the bulk information is located. <

> While I have not found any of mine yet, I consider this material a mother load for information and I also think it is really dumb to do all this work and not share it with all the others looking for the same name. If you can't find your own maybe someone else will get lucky. <

> Anyway, that is a simplified explanation of what you are looking at. It is really meant for you to look for your person and pray you'll get lucky. There are tons more Connors which we haven't gotten to yet - don't know when we will get back to NYC again - summer is always so busy and it's always so brutally humid in new York. I grew up in new York city and never knew about these records until someone in the genealogy forum here at AOL mentioned it in a chat. I jumped on the wagon with this because we know so very little about our Connor. Also be sure to understand that the question marks mean that I was unable to read some of the records and put down something that might just have looked like the word. I have a lot of trouble with townland names and ships; the names of the people seem to be valid with a few exceptions.

HI All Anyone interested in these New Yorkers? They will appear on the O'Connor pages as time permits. :)

From: Coolehane Return-path: To: Pegoconnor@aol.com Subject: O'Connor Marriage Certs Date: Sat, 3 Jan 1998 13:19:45 EST Organization: AOL (http://www.aol.com) Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-transfer-encoding: 7bit

Hi Everyone I had a typo in the address for brownt01. Please note that it is a 0 (zero) rather than a letter o. Sorrry!

Hi Everyone: please welcome our two new members shown in the carbon copy side of this mail. Please share your info and perhaps someone will connect.
Lazzy and Brown: I will forward you mine shortly. Good Luck to all!

Hi Ho Everyone: Here's another marriage cert I blew $5 and which still isn't mine. Let me know if anyone connects to it.
Michael O.Connor, born Ireland, age 55, a widower marries Mary Donovan, born England, age 42 or 43, a single lady in Manhattan, in September 1902.
His parents are Philip O'Connor and Bridget Devine. Hers are Michael Donovan and Anne Flatley.
Here's hoping.... :)

Hi Everyone: To our two new members here is my outline. To all, please note I have finally nailed down my Michael, with wife and children on the 1910 census... (actually a very kind cousin did it for me, God bless him). So, please take another look at Michael A. and his family...perhaps a connection now? Of course, I will now try to find his marriage cert and get Elizabeth's maiden name.
Just wanted to share as I am one happy little puppy :)

Hi Everyone:

Hope all are well and having success in your research.

Please welcome Joan to our group and share your O'Connors with her.

As always, my hope is that eventually some of us are going to be related LOL

"I would love to be included in this group. I don't know anything about my great great grandmother other than her name was Esther O'Connor, she married Bernard Costello in Ireland, they had one son in Manchester, England (she was prevented from getting on a ship because of the imminent birth of her child), came to the US right after his birth and had more children. Family tradition says that in every generation of O'Connor's there was a daughter named "Esther". I don't know if my Esther had a daughter named Esther, but she did have a granddaughter named Esther.

Hi all Just in case you are not on this list, I am forwarding in case it helps. :)

By the way, GFSJamie@aol.com seems not to be a member any more - keeps rejecting. I removed from my list.

Hi Everyone:
The following are from the NYC 1890 Police Census, Ward 2.
If they are together, it appears they are living together.
If there is a space, then it appears they are individuals.
This is the only info given on this, address, name and age.
Hope it helps someone. Not finished the reel; maybe more to come :)
